In the novel " The House of the Scorpion " there are many different settings throughout the book. the first setting is Matt's home he had grown up in, the little house in the poppy fields. A couple chapters later, Matt is carried to the Alacran Estate in which a large chunk of the novel takes place. While Matt is in the Alacran Estate he visits other places such as a hidden oasis and the eejit pens located near the waste dump site. After many chapters, Matt is forced to flee Opium to avoid death and travels to Altzan. as Matt comes up to the border he sees a totally different world in front of his eyes. He is taken in, then put to work until he is supposed to leave. when Matt arrives he is placed inside a plankton factory in which is dark, dirty and harsh. after several chapters Matt and his friend Chacho are put into the Bone Pit, in which lie the remains of whales, and left alone. They escape and make it to the Convent of Santa Clara where Matt can finally relax. The final setting of the book is the Alacran Estate once again, except this time when Matt arrives its a gloomy and very quiet to what he remembered it to be.

Setting Questions:

1. Why do you think the author chose a small house in the poppy fields to begin the novel?

2. How does Matt react when he is getting carried into the mansion?

3. why is Matt thrown into a jail like room?

4. Matt is taken out of the jail like room and given a proper room, Why?

5. Where does Tam Lin take Matt? Why?

6. How do the children describe the hospital?

7. where is Matt when everyone in the house is searching for him?

8. How does Matt describe what he sees as hes hiking?

9. Where is Matt and Chacho placed for staring a little riot?

10. What is the festival in the city they arrive in for?

  1. 3. He is thrown into a jail like room because he is a clone. Clones are seen as equal, or less than animals. Because of this, Rosa puts him into a cage that would be considered, by some, to be an animal cage.

  2. 4.He is taken out of the room because El Patron finds out about the room. el Patron gives him a new room because he wants Matt to be healthy. He wants this becase if El Patron is to have an accident (heart attack etc), he needs Matts organs to survive.

  3. 5. Tam Lin takes him to a place that is later refered to as "the Oasis". he takes him here to get him out of the mansion, and away from the negativity towards Matt in the mansion. He also takes him here to show Matt survival techniques, and other things Matt wouldn't normally learn.

  4. 7. When everyone in the house is looking for him, Matt is hiding in a secret tunnel system, that he assumes was made by El Patron when he was younger to spy on people and use as an escape route if necessary.

  5. 5. Tam Lin takes Matt to the oasis beyond the poppy feilds. He takes him there because Tam Lin is instructed to take care and guide Matt by El patron. By taking him to the oasis, Tam Lin teaches Matt about how to survive in the wilderness. Also because, Matt has been through alot so getting him away from everything will help him cope with everyone and everything.

  6. 7. When everyone is searching for Matt, he is hiding in his secret passge way hiden in the closet of the music room. This passage has many other detours, routes and peepholes in which Matt can spy on other people. After learning about the heart attack that El Patron just had, everyone goes into a frenzy making everyone search for him.

  7. 3. Matt is thrown into a jail room because after Mr. Alacran realises that Matt is a clone by loooking at his mark on his foot. Mr. Alacran then becomes enraged and demands why is this "thing" in the mansion. Matt is then thrown out like a piece of garbage on the lawn, then later thrown into the jail cell.

  8. 4. Matt is taken out of the jail cell and given a proper room because El Patton discovers that Matt has been terribly mistreated by Rosa. El Patron then immediately demands for his servants to give him a much proper room and to stop his servants from mistreating him.

  9. 9. Matt and Chacho are placed in the Bone Pit. This is a place where many dead whales have been placed, and have decayed to just bones. Children are put in here because they are very disobedient, or because they have done something very wrong (such as starting a riot). Usually kids are put in here to teach them a lesson by scaring them, and they are throw in untied up. But Matt and Chacho are tossed in fully restricted by ropes, in an attempt to kill them made by the keepers.

  11. 1. I believe the author chose to start the novel with a small house in the poppy fields because it sets up the rest of the play. It sets up the rest of the play by introducing a very meager begging, after which, everything seems to be bigger and brighter than Matt's begging. It also emphasizes the sheer size, wealth and power of the Alacrán estate
